Aaron X. Wittman Memorial Scholarship
SGT Aaron X. Wittman was killed in action while serving in Afghanistan from injuries sustained when his unit was attacked by small arms fire while on mounted patrol. He was assigned to the 3rd Infantry Division, Ft. Stewart, Ga. Aaron graduated from The Citadel, L Company Class of 2007. He served in the SC National Guard while attending The Citadel and deployed to Afghanistan with the 218th Brigade Combat Team in 2007. After returning from Afghanistan in 2008, Aaron reentered The Citadel as a Veteran Student, completed his last semester, and walked the graduation stage with his four deployed classmates with the Class of 2009. Totally committed to family, friends, and country, Aaron enlisted in the U.S. Army in 2010 and was ultimately assigned to the 3rd Infantry Division and was promoted to Sergeant. Aaron was Airborne qualified, fluent in the Pashto language, exceptionally fit, and loved his soldiers. Aaron received numerous awards including the Combat Infantryman Badge and the Purple Heart and Bronze Star posthumously. Aaron was an amazing son, brother, and friend who treasured the Southern lifestyle of Charleston, SC that included fishing, crabbing, and extensive beach time with his friends and classmates. His childhood, Citadel, and military friends will always remember him for his infectious smile and humor. The purpose of the Aaron X. Wittman, ’07 Memorial Scholarship is to provide funds to support a Citadel cadet who is a rising sophomore and who needs financial assistance to complete his or her education. The recipient must possess and maintain those attributes of ability, character, temperament, and personality that are in accord with the traditionally high standards of The Citadel. In addition to financial need the recipient should meet the following criteria: achieve a 2.0 GPA for freshman year; maintain a 2.5 GPA to renew the scholarship in consecutive years. Meeting one of the following criteria is highly desired but not required: a member of the United States Army National Guard/Reserve Component Forces; desire a future in the United States Armed Forces.
