Manley Earl Porter Scholarship

In February of 2010, The Citadel Foundation learned that Manley Earl Porter had left $360,000 in his Last Will and Testament to The Citadel Foundation to establish the Manley Earl Porter Scholarship Fund. The purpose of this endowment is to provide funds to support a cadet with demonstrated financial need in honor of MAJ Porter’s distinguished career. Manley Earl Porter was born in Orangeburg County, South Carolina and graduated from high school in Springfield, South Carolina in 1938 while working in auto service full-time. He served in the United States Army Air Corps in World War II. He entered Georgia Tech where he received an Air Force Commission as Second Lieutenant in 1948. He graduated from Georgia Tech in 1949 with a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering. He entered the United States Air Force in 1949 as an officer and served in various engineering related positions such as nuclear weapons maintenance and missile guidance systems development. Upon retiring from the United States Air Force in 1966, he continued working in aerospace programs such as NASA’s Apollo (moon) program and the United States Army’s Anti-Missile system. He retired in 1976.
