Buyer Family Top Leadership Scholarship

In August of 2015, the Honorable Stephen Buyer and his wife, Joni Buyer, announced to The Citadel Foundation their intention to establish the Buyer Family Top Leadership Scholarship. Stephen E. Buyer, The Citadel Class of 1980, was a member of the United States House of Representatives, serving nine consecutive terms and representing Indiana’s 4th (previously 5th) Congressional district from January 1993 to January 2011. Congressman Buyer’s long tenure in Congress, especially his service on the committees on Veterans Affairs and Armed Services, along with his many years of active and reserve military service, affords him considerable insight into the challenges facing service members, veterans, and families. Congressman and Mrs. Buyer believe in the value and honor of the lessons learned by those serving in top leadership of the South Carolina Corps of Cadets and Regimental Band. In establishing this scholarship, the Buyers intend to acknowledge these high-achieving cadets while giving back to his alma mater. The primary purpose of this endowment is to provide funds to support two scholarship awards. One award shall be made to the Captain of the Regimental Band; and the second to a member of the Regimental Staff of the South Carolina Corps of Cadets. Recipients should possess those attributes of ability, character, temperament, and personality that are in accord with the traditionally high standards of The Citadel. ROTC scholarship recipients are ineligible for consideration.
