Mother Emanuel AME Church Forgiveness and Leadership Scholarship

In December of 2015, Mr. Niall Gannon announced to The Citadel Foundation his intention to establish the Mother Emanuel AME Church Forgiveness and Leadership Scholarship. Mr. Gannon was moved by the outpouring of support and the leadership the community expressed after the shooting of nine members of Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina. The spirit of forgiveness conveyed by family members of those who were killed inspired Mr. Gannon to make this gesture in recognition of their humility and leadership. The primary purpose of this endowment is to provide funds to support a cadet or cadets, as determined by the Chaplain to the Corps of Cadets in coordination with the college’s Director of Financial Aid, who embody the principles of forgiveness, leadership, and courage within the framework of The Citadel community and who demonstrate financial need. First preference will be given to an African-American cadet. In years in which no African-American cadet is eligible, the scholarship may be awarded to other cadets who demonstrate the principles described above.
