McMillan-Mellette Family Scholarship
In May of 2018, Mr. and Mrs. J. Marshall McMillan, The Citadel Class of 1968, announced to The Citadel Foundation his intention to establish the McMillan-Mellette Family Scholarship. Mr. and Mrs. McMillan are creating this heritage scholarship to honor and memorialize individuals from immediate and ancestral generations of Mr. McMillan’s family who attended The Citadel as follows: Mr. McMillan’s father, Brigadier General Hoyt McMillan, USMC, Class of 1935; Mr. McMillan’s brother, Lieutenant Commander Michael Reid McMillan, M.D., USN, Class of 1963; Mr. McMillan’s son, Neil Patrick McMillan, Class of 2004; and Mr. McMillan’s paternal great grandfather, Peter Mellette from Wedgefield, SC: Sumter County appointee to Arsenal Academy 1861; transferred to Citadel Academy 1862; Battalion of State Cadets (1861-1862); Cadet Ranger, Company F, 6th Regiment SC Cavalry, CSA (1862 inception-until captured Johns Island, SC 1864, Prisoner of War, Fort Delaware 1864-1865); member of Class of 1865 and, ultimately, Association of Graduates 1886. The purpose of the McMillan-Mellette Family Scholarship is to provide academic scholarship support with eligibility available only to rising junior and senior members of the South Carolina Corps of Cadets who have been enrolled at The Citadel since their freshman year and who are seeking an undergraduate Bachelor of Science degree. 1) First preference is for cadets who are considered permanent residents of Conway, South Carolina; 2) Second preference is for cadets who are considered permanent residents of Horry County, South Carolina; 3) Third preference is for cadets from Conway or Horry County, South Carolina who are USMC contract students and/or cadets who are considered a career in the USMC and/or who have expressed a sincere interest in joining the USMC. If there is no qualified applicant per the above criteria and preferences, the scholarship may be awarded to cadets meeting the above criteria and preferences from either Wedgefield, South Carolina, or the counties of Marion, Dillon, or Marlboro, South Carolina. In any given year, if no eligible candidate is identified, the funds should be reinvested until a qualified candidate is identified.
